HOOKED: A THRILLER ABOUT LOVE AND
OTHER ADDICTIONS (HARDCOVER) BY MATT RICHTEL
A
freelance writer with a medical degree narrowly escapes a bomb explosion
in a San Francisco after a mysterious woman hands him a note warning him
to exit immediately.
The handwriting on the note belongs to his deceased
girlfriend, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist whom he has been
obsessively mourning . . .
This is the setup for Hooked, a noir-like thriller with
a single sci-fi device acting as its McGuffin. Author Richtel fills his
literary creation with the sort of detail that makes for an immersive and
believable universe. The only problem is Hooked is a bit like a Stephen
King thriller: the setup is fantastic, but the resolution is bland. Still,
one torture by acupuncture scene ought to stick in the reader’s head and
ought to translate well to the big screen.
Any director translating Hooked to the big screen
though should do well to the action ante, maybe throwing in a gratuitous
car chase scene or two, who knows? Still, Hooked ought to make for a
passable Michael Crichton-style action thriller. All style and flash, but
no substance . . .
