Warner
Home Video finally releases the final fourteen episodes from Season One of this Cartoon
Network show on a double-disc set after three single-disc releases. To
confuse matters further these three discs can now also be bought together as
a bundle. Why they didn’t just release a complete series box set to start
with remains a mystery and merely served to irk fans.
If you haven’t seen a single episode of this animated superhero show then
this isn’t the place to start. Best to check out the bundle that contains
volumes 1, 2 and 3 and then buy this set which in effect contains volumes 4
and 5. Or you can wait for Warner to release the whole caboodle as a full
season set on either DVD or Blu-ray – whenever that happens one day.
Unlike the other current animated superhero show,
Batman: Brave & the Bold,
episodes of Young justice must be
watched in sequence since they do follow a story arc that gets rather
involved at times. (The final episode ends of a cliff-hanger, but hey, what
were we expecting?)
Young Justice is a mesh up of
Justice League of America and Teen Titans,
with our group of lesser-known teenaged sidekick superheroes such as Robin,
Superboy (a youthful Superman clone in effect) and Kid Flash forming a team
separate from the big gun characters such as Superman, Batman and Green
Lantern. The voice talent is great and the animation is your usual DC
animation with bold lines, bright colors and a hint of anime thrown in for
good measure. It’s not as much sheer post-modernist fun as Brave & the
Bold and takes itself more seriously, but it should appeal to comic fans
even though older fans would probably be scratching their heads as to whom
some of these younger characters are exactly.
Recommended.
