Warcraft:
The Rise of The Lich King (2011)
Starring: TBA
Director: Sam Raimi
U.S. Opening Date: TBA 2011
THEY SAY
An epic fantasy/adventure based on the popular video
game series.
His evil is legend. Lord of the undead Scourge, wielder
of the runeblade Frostmourne, and enemy of the free peoples of Azeroth.
The Lich King is an entity of incalculable power and unparalleled malice -
his icy soul utterly consumed by his plans to destroy all life on the
World of Warcraft.
But it was not always so.
Long before his soul was fused with that of the orc
shaman Ner'zhul, the Lich King was Arthas Menethil, crown prince of
Lordaeron and faithful paladin of the Silver Hand. When a plague of
undeath threatened all that he loved, Arthas was driven to pursue an
ill-fated quest for a runeblade powerful enough to save his homeland.
Yet the object of his search would exact a heavy price
from its new master, beginning a horrifying descent into damnation.
Arthas's path would lead him through the arctic northern wastes toward the
Frozen Throne, where he would face, at long last, the darkest of
destinies.
Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft universe is a
rich fantasy setting that revolves around the epic conflict between the
opposing forces of the Horde and the Alliance. Since its debut in 1994,
Warcraft has developed a loyal following across the globe, with several
bestselling, award-winning PC games and a range of popular licensed
products including novels, action figures, apparel, comic books, board
games, and more. World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment's
subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in
the Warcraft universe, is the most popular game of its kind in the
world.
Its most recent expansion, "Wrath of the Lich King," is the
fastest-selling PC game of all time, with more than 2.8 million copies
sold in its first 24 hours of availability and more than 4 million in its
first month.
WE SAY
Most movies based on videogames are, well, shite.
However, now that director Sam Raimi has signed on one is more hopeful for
a movie adaptation of this hugely popular, sprawling online game. Sam
Raimi of course directed the Evil Dead movies (including
Army of Darkness) and the
Spiderman trilogy. His most recent
flick was the excellent horror flick Drag Me to Hell. Rumors have
it that Raimi will
probably start working on Warcraft: The Rise of the Lich King now
that
Spider-man 4 has fallen through.
Good news indeed. Still, this movie project was
announced as long ago as 2006 and they only got round to hiring a director
in 2009. It might just end up spending yet more time in development hell
as far as we know . . .
